Economic instability caused by U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs has led the B.C. government to tighten its budget.
Finance Minister Brenda Bailey announced on Thursday that the government will put the $1,000 rebate, promised during the election, on hold ahead of the March 4 provincial budget.
Bailey stated that the effects of these “reckless” and “destabilizing” tariffs are unpredictable.
B.C. Premier David Eby introduced the tax cut last year, which would have granted $1,000 to households and single parents, and $500 to individuals.
However, in light of Trump’s ongoing economic threats, Bailey said the government will suspend the rebate and implement a hiring freeze across all BC Public Service positions.
Internship programs that promote reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion—such as the Indigenous Youth Internship Program, Work-Able, Co-op, and Youth Employment programs—will be exempt from the hiring freeze.
"It is evident that BC Public Service must take stronger action to address ongoing fiscal constraints and the potential impact of U.S. tariffs," the government stated on its website.
