Pierre Poilievre's Statement on Prison Policy and Gender-Specific Spaces
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre recently announced that, if elected Prime Minister, he would put an end to the current prison policy that allows male inmates to be transferred to women’s prisons. Under the current system, an inmate’s placement in a men’s or women’s facility is based on self-declared gender identity. Prisoners can fill out a basic form stating they now identify as female, and under Correctional Service Canada’s policy, they are transferred to a women’s prison without requiring a doctor’s approval or mental health evaluation. While many Canadians are unaware of this policy, it remains the official approach.

Controversy Over Prison Policy
Pierre Poilievre posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “A man who killed his wife and two kids now claims to be a woman and wants to go to a women’s prison. I can’t believe I have to say this, but when I’m Prime Minister, there will be no male prisoners in women’s prisons.”He also supported the idea of banning transgender women from participating in women’s sports or accessing “women-only” spaces like changing rooms and washrooms. However, he stopped short of committing to legislation on the matter, stating in a press conference, “Women’s spaces should be reserved for women, not for biological men.”
Federal vs. Provincial Jurisdictions
Poilievre noted that many gender-specific spaces, such as restrooms and changing rooms, fall under provincial or municipal jurisdiction, making it unclear what a future Conservative government could do to restrict their use to biological females. He emphasized, however, “Women’s sports, women’s changing rooms, and women’s bathrooms should be for women, not biological men.”

Backlash and Criticism
Poilievre’s stance has drawn criticism from transgender activists, who accused him of “violating transgender women’s rights” and “oppressing our community to appease far-right radicals.”Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded in Edmonton, criticizing the Conservatives for stirring up conflicts with the LGBTQ community. He remarked, “Pierre Poilievre and politicians like him choose to attack the most vulnerable people in our society to distract from their talent for creating division, anger, and toxicity in politics.”
