Canada will establish its first preclearance site in the U.S. this year as part of efforts to enhance border security in response to growing pressure from incoming U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

加拿大边境服务局（CBSA）周四宣布，一项为期两年的运营将于纽约Cannon Corners边境口岸的共享设施中启动，该口岸与魁北克Covey Hill口岸隔境相望。

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced Thursday that a two-year operation will be initiated at a shared facility located at the Cannon Corners port of entry in New York, across the border from Quebec's Covey Hill port of entry.

在这两年期间，Covey Hill边境口岸将关闭，旅客需通过Cannon Corners进入加拿大。

During this period, the Covey Hill port of entry will be closed to travelers, who will need to use Cannon Corners to enter Canada.

“At the preclearance site, Canadian officers will examine travelers and goods to determine their admissibility into Canada, just as they currently do at Canadian ports of entry,” CBSA said in a press release.

This includes screening for hazardous items such as firearms and drugs before they depart the U.S.”

CBSA stated that travelers cannot submit refugee protection claims at this preclearance site; however, they can do so at Canadian ports of entry.

The agency also noted that most other types of immigration requests will be processed at this location.

The announcement comes just weeks before Trump is set to take office. Trump has warned that he will impose a 25% tariff on all Canadian imports unless Canada strengthens its border security.

In response, the Canadian government unveiled a $1.3 billion border plan last month, which includes a joint strike force and a round-the-clock aerial surveillance team for ports of entry.

The U.S. currently operates preclearance sites at eight Canadian airports and one marine facility. At these locations, U.S. customs and immigration officers are authorized to approve or deny entry of travelers and goods into the U.S. from Canada.
