One Employee’s “Oops” Cost Macy’s Millions: Still Think Your Work Mistake Was Bad?

Made a mistake at work recently? Don’t sweat it—just remember Macy’s former employee. Yesterday, the department store revealed they’re delaying their full Q3 earnings report after discovering an employee had hidden $132 to $154 million in delivery expenses over three years.

According to Macy’s, an employee in “small package delivery expense accounting” filed fake reports from Q4 2021 through November 2 of this year to intentionally hide expenses. Over the past three years, Macy’s reported $4.36 billion in delivery expenses—turns out 3% wasn’t accounted for at all.

Macy’s didn’t say much beyond: 1) that person (gender-neutral) is fired, and 2) full Q3 earnings will probably be released by December 11 after an independent investigation wraps up.

For now, Macy’s, Walmart, Amazon, Target, and countless other retailers are turning Black Friday into “Black Fri-Month” to squeeze more out of cautious shoppers. The National Retail Federation predicts holiday sales will hit a record high of nearly $1 trillion, though growth will be the slowest since 2018.
