The Canadian Dream: Sell Your Land for a Visa, Wake Up to a Nightmare?

Come Study, Explore, Work, and Stay in Canada"前国际学生Simrat Kaur还记得,当初加拿大打出这句响亮的口号,把留学生活包装得像天堂。
Former international student Simrat Kaur still remembers Canada's flashy slogan that made studying in Canada sound like a dream. Add to that former Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino’s TV plea: "We don’t just want you to study here; we want you to stay!"
But reality hits like a brick.
At a press conference this Wednesday, Kaur vented her frustration with Canada’s “double standards.” Joining trade union leaders, she called on the government to extend expiring work permits and provide a clear path to permanent residency.
The Three-Year Immigration Plan: Serving Problems, Not Solutions上个月,联邦政府公布了一个“三年移民计划”,明年永久居民的目标人数将减少21%,只接纳39.5万人;2026年和2027年将继续减少,同时大幅削减临时居民数量。
Last month, the government rolled out a three-year immigration plan: permanent resident targets will drop by 21% next year to 395,000, with further cuts in 2026 and 2027. Temporary residents will also be slashed, assuming 1.26 million will “pack their bags” and leave voluntarily next year.
The problem? No one wants to leave!
Kaur explained that with fewer PR spots, temporary residents have no choice. They transition to visitor visas, buy fake job offers, re-enroll in school, or even file baseless asylum claims. It’s the ultimate “plot twist.”
Many students’ families sold land and took on debt for the “Canadian dream.” Kaur lamented, "This has been devastating for us."
Jessica Cooper, president of Peel's elementary teachers' union, slammed the government for treating international students and migrant workers as “disposable labour” and scapegoating them for housing and affordability issues. "This blame is both racist and irresponsible!"
We Need Them, But Policies Push Them Out
Bob Punia, president of the Ontario Dump Truck Association, emphasized how international graduates fill vital labour shortages. "This isn’t something you can turn on and off. Once they’re gone, replacing them is very hard."
In Conclusion: The “Canadian Dream” script seems to be wrapping up, but the cast isn’t ready to leave the stage.
