Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk sparked controversy by publicly supporting Germany’s far-right party in a major newspaper ahead of the country’s key parliamentary elections, prompting the resignation of the paper’s opinion editor in protest.
Germany is set to hold an early election on February 23 following the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-party coalition last month over a dispute on revitalizing the stagnant economy. Musk’s guest commentary for Welt am Sonntag, a sister publication of POLITICO owned by the Axel Springer Group, marked his second endorsement of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) this month.
In the translated article, Musk stated, "The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is the last spark of hope for this country." He further argued that the far-right party “can lead the country into a future where economic prosperity, cultural integrity, and technological innovation are not just aspirations but achievable realities.” The Tesla CEO also justified his remarks by citing his investments in Germany.
While the AfD is polling strongly, its chancellor candidate, Alice Weidel, has little chance of assuming the role as other parties refuse to collaborate with the far-right faction. An ally of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, Musk challenged the public portrayal of the party in his commentary.
“Labeling the AfD as far-right extremists is clearly mistaken. Alice Weidel, the party leader, has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka! Does that sound like Hitler to you? Come on!” Musk wrote in his piece.
Musk’s remarks spurred debate in German media over the boundaries of free speech, with the opinion editor of Welt am Sonntag announcing her resignation on Musk’s social media platform, X. “I always enjoyed leading the opinion section of WELT and WAMS. Today an article by Elon Musk appeared in Welt am Sonntag. I handed in my resignation yesterday before it went to print,” Eva Marie Kogel wrote.
The future editor-in-chief of the Welt group, Jan Philipp Burgard, penned a critical article accompanying Musk’s commentary. “While Musk’s diagnosis is accurate, his remedy—that only the AfD can save Germany—is fatally flawed,” Burgard wrote.
In response to a query from the German Press Agency, dpa, the current editor-in-chief of the Welt group, Ulf Poschardt, and Burgard, who is set to take over on January 1, issued a joint statement describing the discussion around Musk’s article as “very insightful.” “Democracy and journalism thrive on freedom of expression. This will remain the guiding principle for ‘Welt’ moving forward. We will develop Die Welt more decisively as a platform for such debates,” they stated to dpa.
